Panna is the 22nd Tiger reserve of India and fifth in the
state of Madhya Pradesh. The Reserve is situated in the
Vindhyan Ranges and spreads over Panna and Chattarpur
districts in the north of the state.
Anyone who is familiar with the ‘wild Indian jungles’ of
Hollywood and the small screen, would feel quite at home, if
that is the right term, with the jungles of Madhya Pradesh.
That’s probably because Rudyard Kipling, the first great
romancer of the Indian jungles, set his wonderful tales of
talking animals in these forests. Don’t, however, wander
into the jungles on your own. Our national parks and
sanctuaries have been designed to protect our animals. Many of
them have lost their fear of man but they do resent the
intrusion of humans. You, too, would not like wild animals to
trespass into your home, would you? But, if you stick to the
areas set apart for visitors and never drive into the jungle
without an authorized guide, you’ll want to return to the
jungles again and again.
Our beautiful
spotted deer, Chital, filtered through the trees, wary but not
scared. Chital are the favorites deer of our poets and
painters because they often graze near fields and rivers
For
us, this Park’s prime attraction is that it is a pleasant
excursion away from the monuments of Khajuraho. And it is only
35 kilometers from the town.
Previously
a hunting reserve of the Panna family, the area was declared a
national park in 1981.The main attraction of the parks are
tiger, sloth bear, wolf, chital, chinkara and samber.
